Adventure Meeting

A meeting was held to discuss how best the District might encourage further participation of our younger members in activities of 'adventure'.

The definition of 'adventure' was defined as activities which our young members find adventurous, and includes not only the more traditional activities such as canoeing, shooting, hill walking, caving, climbing, to name but a few etc, but also creative activities and Scoutcraft activities for example.

Conan introduced Clive as the ADC for Adventure and outlined his role as one of facilitating resources and co-ordinating requests for adventure activities by section and Group leaders. He will also work to encourage our members to try something new by organising taster events for example. Quite simply : if a leader has an idea, and wants help in finding adequate and appropriate resources – talk to Clive.

Other activities in the 'melting pot' include (but not exclusively), mountain biking, Scuba diving, orienteering, archery, pedal-karting, handicrafts, sailing, dragon boat racing, entertainments and campfire activities, backwoods cooking, bivouac building (and sleeping !).

The District has some equipment for some activities already (and there may well be equipment held by Groups), but part of the challenge will be to locate suitable equipment to meet short-term needs.  Clearly, many of the 'taster' events may have to make use of external centres for the short and middle-term. If it can be demonstrated however, that repeated use of such equipment is likely, the District will consider purchasing this after setting appropriate budgets.

Similarly, whilst there are a small number of adults within the District with suitable skills, we would want to build a team with expertise (and certification where necessary) – and there be costs associated with this.  As a first stage, and by copy of these notes, we would ask that all adults (not just Scouters) who feel they may have some skills they could offer, to let Clive know on

Additionally, those that presently have certification registered with the District, please contact Clive to update this.

And finally, the meeting recognised that section and District programmes are usually too full to accommodate still more District events announced in the short-term.  Clive will work to facilitate section activities, but the District also wants to work with sections and Groups to provide adventure on a wider scale than just at sectional level. And to plan events that maximises participation, the Team will need to plan considerably in advance.   To start collating information on what folk want, Clive, Mark and Peter will arrange to meet with leaders at sectional ADC meetings in the coming months.

So, to summarise :

Please contact Clive to

  • Ask for assistance in staging an activity at section or Group level;
  • Indicate an interest in gaining skills to help lead an adventure activity;
  • Update certifications presently held;
  • Register resources available locally; and,
  • Suggest District events that could be staged;

SPECIAL NEEDS IN SCOUTING

A 'Special' or 'particular' need is any personal condition (eg asthma) or situation that might make it difficult for a young person or adult to participate fully in Scouting.
Scouting has always embraced many different cultures, faiths and lifestyles. Our Equal Opportunities Policy states that no person should receive less favourable treatment because of their class, ethic origin, gender, marital or sexual status or their political and religious beliefs.  All young people are individuals and they must be regarded equally as Members of the Movement, whatever their abilities. Some young people have Special Needs and require extra resources in terms of appropriate programme support and equipment to enable them to develop to their full potential.  Whenever possible this Policy is achieved by integrating young people with Special Needs into mainstream Scouting. Where this is not possible or appropriate, there is a network of Special Groups for young people who would otherwise not be able to participate and enjoy Scouting, for example, in our County we have the Pang Valley Scout Group, run by Susan Clarkson.  Where necessary, due to a young person's special needs, the District Commissioner may permit a young person to be in a Section outside of the normal age range.
About one child in six will require some form of special education provision at some time. Therefore most Groups or Units will have one or more young people who have needs that are in some way particular to them.  There are a large number of factsheets available from HQ covering most of these, and should you need further help, I am more than happy to be involved and will give whatever support is required. Factsheets are available at Scout Base
