Dear District Executive Committee Members & Fellow Scouters.
Conan Fryer to be appointed South Berkshire District Commissioner.
It gives me great pleasure to announce within our District that Hamish Stout
in his position of County Commissioner for Berkshire has approved the
appointment of Conan Fryer as our new District Commissioner. See copy of the
message from Hamish below. Conan will take up his new role on January 1st
2007 succeeding Peter Forbes who has held the position since April 2000.
Conan first joined South Berkshire District in 2003 as Assistant District Commissioner Scouts with his Scouting going back to 1987 when he was ACSL
for a Pack in Petersfield Hampshire. During the next 2 months handover
period I hope that you will help us in bringing Conan up to date with what
is going on in the District especially in the areas where he has not
previously been involved.
I also hope that you will join me in thanking Peter for all the help and
guidance that he has given to us all over the years as DC and the in the
many other Scouting appointments and activities he has been involved in.
Peter will still continue to be involved in various Scouting activities both
within the County and District after he hands over the reigns on January
1st. Please ensure that this message is communicated to all our fellow
Scouters in South Berkshire District.
Regards,
Richard.
Richard M. Price.
Chairman South Berkshire District Scout Council.
Message from Hamish Stout.
Dear Richard,
You know that the search for a successor to Peter Forbes as District Commissioner of South Berkshire District has taken a little time, but I am delighted to be able to write to you to advise that Conan Fryer has agreed to take on the role from Peter, with effect from 1st January 2007. I know that Conan is well known within the District and I am sure that he will receive much positive support on his appointment. Please make sure that this information is communicated widely around South Berkshire District.
We all owe a debt of gratitude for what Peter has achieved during almost 7 years as District Commissioner and you will also be pleased to know that we will retain Peter’s services in the “development” arena that is so close to his heart –including particularly the work that he is currently leading in Bracknell. Peter will work closely with Geoff Mitchell [Deputy County Commissioner, Development] in this regard but will of course retain links with South (and South East) Berkshire too.
I know that you will support Conan particularly through the transition period and I look forward to supporting the continued development of Scouting in South Berkshire over the next several years.
Best wishes, Hamish
Hamish Stout
County Commissioner, Berkshire
Growing the Movement!
It was a memorable week for 1st Sandhurst Scout Group.
On Tuesday, Erica Malone (Alder) who leads our thriving Beaver Colony, and is also District Beaver Scout Leader, was presented with her 15 Year Long Service Award by Peter Forbes ( photo below ).
Erica is well known for organising fun events such as the memorable "Beaver Messy Day" a day of Art and Craft for Beavers from all over the District.
Many congratulations to Erica, we hope she'll be with us for another 15 years!
On Thursday, not only were SIX new Scouts invested, but our new ASL, Andy Pevy received his warrant from Conan Fryer, ADC Scouts.
Andy, who has a son at 1st Sandhurst Cubs, was first warranted in 1976 and left 4th Godalming in 1994. During that time he was both ASL and SL.
He then took a few years out of Scouting to raise a family and renovate a house, then returned to put back some of the skills that he learned as a Scout.
After all, as Erica and Andy will tell you "It is only a couple of hours a week !! ".
Ed Gilowski, Group Scout Leader

I am delighted to have received from HQ the 25 years service award for you designated the Bar to the Long Service Decoration. It is stiil regrettably exceptional that non warranted adult members and supporters get such recognition and so I am doubly delighted that your service to Scouting is being properly acknowledged. 9th Bracknell has consistently been a well managed Group for many years and I know you have played a full part in this

15/9/06 South Berkshire and South East Berkshire Districts jointly take over the management of Earleywood Campsite. At a meeting of the Berkshire County Executive on Tuesday September 12th and subsequently at the two District Executive meetings both held on Wednesday September 13th agreements were signed to take over the management for the remaining portion of the Earleywood Lease. We officially take over from October 1st 2006. Full story to follow.

20/7/06. The 9th Bracknell Kingfisher Beavers have got a mention and a photo (see below) in the Berkshire Annual Reveiw 2005 - 2006. This is one of the photo's chosen from the Photo of the Week Competition that the Berkshire website runs, photo sent in by Pauline Baker B.S.L.
7/7/06. District Cub Football photo's and results can be found on the Cub News page.
6/7/06. The South Berkshire Young Leaders were invested in lets say a slightly different way, someone suggested that they could pick what they wanted to wear from the Gang show supply store.
The end result was this, unfortunately the Dalek would not fit through the door but the horse made it.
Have you got any comments to add here !
July 2006. The 1st and 2nd Crowthorne Scout Groups had a great time at the Crowthorne Carnival

certificate for 10 years' service to Scouting.
27/6/06.Chris Pether was (re)invested into Scouting tonight as leader at 2nd Easthampstead Cub Scout Pack.
Chris is making a crucial contribution to the resurgence of the pack, which, supported by the kind help of other leaders, is definitely going in the right direction.
Thanks to everyone who has helped keep the pack intact during a difficult period. Not out of the woods yet, but there is daylight!
Best wishes

18/6/06. The 9th Bracknell joined in with a double world record breaking attempt, for more news Click Here
The Business Development Team of South Berks District Scouts staged their third annual corporate golf gala on June 2nd, at Wokefield Park, Mortimer.
Fourteen teams of local business men and women came together for a four-ball stapleford competition, and later enjoyed a Presentation Luncheon, including a raffle and auction.
Chairman of the organising committee, Howard de Silva, said “Once again, we found the course, facilities and staff at Wokefield Park first class, and I know that all our players much appreciated this. The weather was glorious, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. With a great deal of financial support from local commerce and industry, especially from Thames Valley Windows, our Principal Sponsor, the event raised a magnificent £3000.”
This year’s winning team was captained by Barrie Horsted of Afton Chemicals in Bracknell, whose team played a cracking round. However, competition was fierce, and a number of teams were close runners up. Details of the event, together with a large selection of photographs taken during the day, can be found at www.scouts-golf.co.uk. The organisers are already taking enquiries of interest into next year’s event, and these may also be sent via the website.
Congratulations to Graham Huphrey, shown here being presented with his warrant at the 9th Bracknell's AGM by Neil Maxwell the Group Scout Leader, Graham is an A.C.S.L at the Falcon Cub Pack.
Bob Wilson has agreed to be District Safety Coordinator, this will work well with his existing role as Nights/Activities Away Advisor. Please contact Bob for advice or concerns about safety matters from risk assessments through to the safety of premises etc. Bob will link up with Howard de Silva in his role as County Safety Adviser.
I am delighted that Conan Fryer has been awarded the Medal of Merit in recognition of his valued service to Scouting, notably in Hampshire as well as in our own District and not least taking account of Conan's extensive international Scouting service.
I am also delighted that Phil Hart has been awarded the Medal of Merit in recognition of his valued service to Scouting. Phil's contribution has been all the more telling as it has been in a host of non uniformed, important roles from 1st Crowthorne Group Chairman to previously District Chairman, Group fund raiser and currrently District Transport Manager. It is being recognised increasingly that healthy front line Scouting depends on effective support and Phil exemplifies this.
The drive to properly recognise and thank adult members continues..............
Finally, many thanks to all those who helped make St. George's Day such a success, particularly Richard Shirley along with Richard Price, Ian Duncan, Nick Hook, Des Sharp (for the band - wow!), Pam Pearce and Graeme Thompson and a number of other valued helpers. The event had a significant, positive impact on many adults and our guests particularly, judging from the feedback we have had.
Best wishes
Peter ( District Commisioner )

Congratulations to Pauline Jordan, the Chief Scout has awarded Pauline the Bar to the Long Service Decoration in recognition of 25 years' service to Scouting. Pauline's contribution to Scouting is enormous and much appreciated, covering the highly successful management of 2nd Crowthorne, supporting the Gang Show, and not least helping to raise Scouting's profile in the wider community.
With much credit to Howard de Silva (Deputy District Commissioner, Adult Support), over the last 15 months or so there has been a strong push to properly recognise the many adult members in our District whose service has been and continues to be exceptional. This initiative continues and there is much still to do:
We are very proud that Headquarters announced in Aprils Scouting Magazine that the Chief Scout has awarded the following.
Richard Shirley the Silver Acorn in recognition of specially distinguished service.
Richard has been and continues to be a stalwart of Scouting as Group Scout Leader of 1st Easthampstead, a consistently well run Group, and many of us will know he instigated our District Gang Show as well as continues to contribute significantly to District activities such as St. George's Day and Sponsob. Richard shows that 'proper' Scouting can flourish in this day and age and continue to attract young people and inspire adults to be involved.
Eric Johnson the Silver Acorn in recognition of specially distinguished service
Eric has been and continues to give faithful and outstanding service to Scouting, currently as Appointments Secretary. Many will also know of Eric's outstanding service in the District, notably in Groups around Sandhurst both in warranted and also officer roles. Scouting needs someone who can at times 'tell the Emperor he has no clothes on' and Eric's ability to cut to the quick on issues affecting the welfare of young people in Scouting is much valued.
Suzanne Johnson the Silver Acorn in recognition of specially distinguished service.
Suzanne has given outstanding service in an astonishing range of roles over many years in Scouting, including District Commissioner, Group Scout Leader, ADC Adult Training through to prompt in the Gang Show (much appreciated by many!)
I particularly value Suzanne's ability to recognise and deal with some of the more challenging issues in Scouting and to help both adult and young members take their Scouting forward successfully.
Graham Tidy has been awarded the Medal of Merit in recognition of his valued service to Scouting over many years.
Graham's Scouting has latterly taken a back seat for family and business reasons but his contribution to the District and in a number of Groups over a long period of time has been varied and influential. Graham loves traditional Scouting (how many remember Scouterama??) and recognising Graham for what he has done is a sign of the continuing importance of classic Scouting skills and experiences that always attract young people.
Peter Forbes, District Commissioner
Abby Phayer, South Berkshire District Explorer Scout, receives her
Queen's Scout Award medal at the winter camp at Gilwell in January
2006. The mud and freezing weather added to the atmosphere!
Warm congratulations and thanks to Phil Hart for his over 25 year's
service to Scouting in our District. Phil is currently Transport
Manager, particularly important in helping the Explorer Scouts to get
about, as well as Group Chairman at 1st Crowthorne.
Congratulations and warm thanks to SL Kelvin Taylor who continues a long tradition of running an excellent troop at 1st Easthampstead and who has been presented with his 10 years' certificate of good service.
Congratulations to Carol Hodgson and Dan Turner who have been presented with their ABSL warrants at 1st Easthampstead Beaver Scout Colony. The scent of slightly burnt pancakes made the evening especially memorable!
District Beaver Activity Morning held at 9th Bracknell on 4 February 2006
Over 70 Beavers from the District took part in this event, to see the full report and photo's
At the Explorer Scouts AGM, Mark Phayer was presented with a tankard with warm thanks for his work as District Explorer Scout Commissioner. Mark has retired from this post but is continuing to help the unit.
The Explorers continue to have an exciting and challenging programme and I am delighted that Andy Howard has agreed to be the new District Explorer Scout Commissioner.
Explorer Scouts
I would like to thank Mark Phayer most warmly for his highly successful stewardship of the Explorer Scouts and need to tell you all that, primarily for business reasons, Mark is retiring from the role of District Explorer Scout Commissioner on 14 February. He may well continue in some form of leadership role with the Explorer Scouts so for a very short while please await developments.
I am delighted that Andy Howard has agreed to take on the role of District Explorer Scout Commissioner effective 14 February and he and Mark are already engaged in a handover.
We all need to have a thriving Explorer Scout section operating in the District and Mark's legacy is a great platform on which to build future success.
